Top Ten Cleaning Tips

Cleaning your house is the type of work that is perpetual; no sooner have you vacuumed, mopped, dusted, bleached and wiped, its time to vacuum again. However, there are a few ways you can try and keep your house clean and tidy for as long as possible…

1. Firstly, draw up a cleaning timetable so that you know what needs to be done and when. Try and clean as you go; it is much easier to tackle small tasks often than a huge task once a week and once you complete something tick it off the list

2. When cleaning a room, follow simple methodical steps, such as tidy, de-clutter, dust, wipe and lastly vacuum. Try to work from top to bottom; dust, debris and cleaning products will all collect on the floor while you are cleaning and you don’t want to have to end up vacuuming twice.

3. Avoid grubby streaks when mopping your kitchen floor by adopting a two-bucket method and fill one with a mixture of warm water, a squirt of bleach and some washing up liquid, and leave the other empty to squeeze out the excess dirty water.

4. To remove soap scum from showers and bathtubs, use alkaline soap scum remover. Mix up the remover according to packet instructions and coat the entire area. Leave for a good twenty minutes before scrubbing the walls with a nylon scrub brush and some good old fashioned elbow grease; this may need to be done a couple of times to remove the build up.

5. When cleaning wooden floor it is important not to use too much water as this could lead to floorboards buckling, and you should allow wooden floors to dry naturally. They need to be vacuumed and mopped with a dry dust-mop regularly, or wiped down with a solution of warm water with a capful of vinegar.

6. Try to clean you kitchen cupboards at least once a year as frequent cooking leads to a build up of grime, resulting in that oily feel. For plastic laminate, glass or metal cabinets, use alkaline soap scum remover mixed according to instructions. Scrub as vigorously as necessary to remove build up and wipe with a damp cloth then dry with an old towel. For wooden cabinets, use some dishwasher detergent dissolved into warm water, then gently wash the whole cabinet by wiping then drying straight away with an old towel.

7. De-cluttering your house always make it seem so much tidier and makes cleaner a quicker job to complete. A good way to de-clutter and make more room is to weed out old clothes from wardrobes and donating to your local charity shop. Dust shelves and hang lavender scented pouches to freshen stuffy drawers.

8. To tackle furniture, beat sofa cushions outside to remove excess dust, vacuum behind cushions, and polish intricate carvings using an old soft toothbrush and furniture polish. Wash curtains and upholstery when doing a big clean.

9. Keep everything you need in a bucket and bring it round the house with you; you’d be surprised at how much time you’ll save from not having to run downstairs to the kitchen every few minutes.

10. Get rid of distractions; turn off your T.V and unplug your phone. Turn up your favourite upbeat song and get cleaning!
